Mary PRICE Wife of John William DIXON

Here is what is going to prove to be another brickwall - this time on my husband John's tree with another common name of PRICE!

My husband's Great-grandmother was Mary PRICE who married John's Great-grandfather, John William DIXON on 9 March 1876 in the parish of Chrishchurch, Southwark, Surrey.

They were both 'Of Full Age' and John William was a porter living at 10 Broadwall, Southwark. Mary was living at 5 Isabella Street, not very far away. The fathers were listed as John William DIXON, deceased and William Robert PRICE, master drover. They both signed the register, as did their witnesses, Thomas BOUCHER and Ellen LEE.

By checking through the GRO website, where you can check the maiden name of children's birth registration, I found the following children were born to them:

Martha Agnes   DIXON 1Q 1877 St Saviour Surrey Ref 01D 98
James William  DIXON 3Q 1878 St Saviour Surrey Ref 01D 107
John Albert       DIXON 1Q 1881 St Saviour Surrey Ref 01D 91
Edwin William  DIXON 1Q 1883 St Saviour Surrey Ref 01D 106
Alberta Hannah DIXON 3Q 1885 St Saviour Surrey Ref 01D 90
Francis Walter    DIXON 3Q 1887 Holborn Ref 01B 745
William              DIXON 3Q 1890 Holborn Ref 01B 713
George               DIXON 4Q 1891 Holborn Ref 01B 717
Maud Katie        DIXON 3Q 1896 Holborn Ref 01B 708
Leonard              DIXON 2Q 1899 Holborn Ref 01B 712

On the 1881 census, they are living at 13 Cole Street, Newington. John is a 30 year old Drysalter's Porter and he says he was born in St Giles, Middlesex. Mary is 26 years old and says she was born in Holborn, Middlesex. Martha, James and John are with them, all with a birth place of Lambeth, Surrey.

On the 1891 census, they are living at 1 Rodney Street, Clerkenwell. The page of entries is a little strange in that the whole page is number 1 Rodney Street which seems odd! This requires further investigation!
However, John is 40 years old and still a porter in a dry salter's but now he says he was born in Bloomsbury, London. Mary is 35 years old and says she was born in Lambeth, Surrey. With them are Martha, John Albert,  Edwin, Alberta and Francis W. Presumably James William has flown the nest. Has little baby William died?

On the 1901 census, they are living in St Lukes, Finsbury. John is a 50 years old porter of dry goods and spices. Mary is 46 and with them are Martha, John, Albertha (spelling variation), Francis, George, Maud and Leonard. For the whole family there is only 'London' as place of birth. Presumably Edwin has also flown the nest (or died). However, I need to investigate further what happened to William born in 1890.

On the 1911 census, John and Mary are living at 23 Chamberlain Road, Edmonton, a road in an area that was completely redeveloped in the 1970s and doesn't exist now. John was 60 and still a porter in a dry salter and he says he was born in Holborn, London as does the 56 year old Mary. She also says she's been married for 35 years and has had 13 children with 7 still living and 6 that have died. I think I'm missing a couple of children so will have to look again; I've only found 10 birth registrations. Of course, possibly these extra children were stillbirths that Mary still counted?
On the 1911 census, they also have living with them their daughter Maud, aged 13, their son Leonard, aged 11 and their married daughter Albertha MAUL with her husband Henry MAUL and their first child, Henry MAUL. Albertha and Henry are down as lodgers rather than the correct relationship but Albertha is clearly their married daughter!

However, all these various census seems to be reasonably consistent with Mary's age so her birth year should be 1855 or 1856. However, if I search in 1854, 1855 and 1856 in Holborn there are no Mary PRICEs at all! The same applies if I search in Lambeth which seems odd!

How best to find Mary PRICE before she marries in 1876?
