William PRICE, Mary's mystery brother!

To recap on my investigation of the PRICE family found on the 1871 census, I've discovered that Dad and Mum are William PRICE and his wife Mary PRICE nee VALANTINE. That they were married on 17 July 1861. That the youngest child, Martha Ann was born on 3 Oct 1861 and baptised on 3 Jul 1864. That the eldest child, Mary, was in fact Mary's illegitimate child born 24 Jul 1854 and her birth was registered with the name Mary VALANTINE. When Mary VALANTINE/PRICE was baptised, her real father put his name on the baptism and he was William WILCOCK. Mary clearly 'adopted' or more likely was given the surname of PRICE when her mother married William PRICE.

However, what about the 10 year old William PRICE on the 1871 census with the birthplace of just Surrey?

My throwaway comment on the last blog post was that maybe he was also the illegitimate child of Mary VALANTINE. However, I'm now not so sure!

As William was 10 years old on the 1871 census, I was expecting to find him as a child aged under one year old on the 1861 census but there isn't a William with Mary VALANTINE. As he was such a young child, surely he would have been with his mother? If William was born to Mary VALANTINE just after the 1861 census and on the 1871 census they rounded his age up as he was almost 10, that also won't work. Martha Ann is born on 3 Oct 1861 and it's very unlikely that Martha would have survived if she'd been born after a pregnancy lasting at most 5 months!

So, who is William PRICE?

I could do a speculative search of the 1881 census, looking for the 20 year old William PRICE hopefully born in Surrey. However, at the moment, I don't know what that will prove! I have no idea what occupation he will have gone on to have.

I could try to find William PRICE senior on the 1861 census and see who is with him. Hopefully he was a drover all his life, otherwise identifying the right William PRICE will be difficult. I have tried to find this William before with no luck, but I will try again :)

However, in thinking about this, perhaps it would be better to see if I can find this William PRICE as a 10 year old, living (hopefully) with his father Richard PRICE, also a drover and trace forward from there? I'm not entirely sure what benefit that will give but it is worth a try!

However, the 1841 census is rather difficult to search, given that they were only asked to say 'Yes' or 'No' to whether they were born in the County they were living in. I looked at a large number of records but couldn't find anything probable and, even if I had, I don't think I have enough to go on to determine whether anything I find is the right one!

I think I need to go back to looking at birth registrations and baptisms to find this elusive William PRICE!
